What did the site breaking bug do?

What did it do really? I see replies with the parentheses and it's so called a bug. Curious..

it basiccly just made it so you couldnt see a page at all with javascript enabled and this was bad for levels as if it was on a level page you couldnt play that level no more

Doing some research it happens because the site tried to treat user text as code instead of plain text. It tried to execute it through a template and failed meaning the JavaScript crashed. Then the whole page stopped rendering. (Correct me if I'm wrong :) )
