I would like to preface this by saying the following thoughts are based on my personal experience and perspective playing Counter-Strike 2's [CS:2] beta version. Counter-Strike: Global Offensive [CS:GO] has played a significant role in my life, and I offer these insights in the spirit of sharing my passion for Counter-Strike. As a player with over 8,000 hours invested in CS:GO since early 2014 and a past history in semi-professional play, with ~50 matches played on HLTV, my perspective may be influenced by my extensive time spent on CS:GO. I am now just a casual and washed-up player who plays with friends during my spare time.

I understand that the CS2 version is a limited-test, and not the full release. I have come into CS2 with an open mind and am fully aware that the game will still be in development and subject to changes. Therefore, I will discuss and evaluate CS2's current state compared to CS:GO.

Firstly, I'd like to consider some of the most important elements of CS:GO. While I won't delve into every aspect, I'll highlight key factors that can serve as reference points when discussing and evaluating CS2.

High Frame Rate and Optimised Graphics

CS:GO is optimised to run on a wide range of setups. We can often achieve fairly high and consistent frame rates on moderately powerful computers (with some optimisations). Further, CS:GO's graphics are finely tuned to strike a harmonious balance between visual quality and performance. This ensures that players with diverse setups can enjoy a seamless experience without compromising substantially on visual quality.

'Buttery Smooth' Feeling

Secondary to high frame rates, us players often describe the ideal CS:GO experience where everything feels exceptionally smooth, responsive, fast, and crisp. This is often attributed to other factors as well, including low-input lag and network infrastructure (i.e. 128-tick servers, responsive netcode, etc).

Movement

CS:GO's movement system feel intuitive, responsive, and quick. Character animations are smooth and fluid, allowing for advanced movements like bunny-hopping and strafing to feel seamless. This is a fundamental aspect of the game's competitive gameplay and contributes to the overall depth and skill ceiling of CS:GO.

There are many other factors which make CS:GO an elite first-person shooter game. However, after playing around 15 games of CS2, I can confidently state that there are numerous issues that need addressing.

Firstly, I think most can agree that performance is currently the biggest issue. The general consensus is that, even with optimisations, CS2 is not delivering with high and consistent frame rates. Although my PC is equipped to produce high frames, it is not able to constantly produce 300+ frames per second [fps] unlike CS:GO, which is producing 400 to 500 fps. I understand as games advance (i.e. Source 1 to Source 2 Engine) and technology evolves, the demand on hardware to deliver high frame rates and optimal performance will increase. CS2 is supposed to be an improved iteration of the game, yet it is marked by a concerning perception of poor performance. My gameplay experience should exhibit a smooth, swift, and crisp response, instead it feels noticeably delayed and lacks the fluidity and responsiveness expected. Further, there is noticeable stuttering and screen-tearing which feels like 60hz at times. Even though my system maintains a fairly high frame rate (i.e. 250 to 350 fps), the overall gameplay experience within CS2 resembles that of a considerably lower frame rate.

Secondly, it feels like the movement is quite 'sluggish'. I have switched between both CS:GO and CS:2 and the distinction is clear. The movement in CS2 is not yet refined to what Counter-Strike should feel like, and the input lag which is evident makes aiming and moving feel delayed. From swapping between the two games, it feels like 128-tick is much more responsive and elegant compared to the current sub-tick system. This might just be me, but the current sub-tick system feels like a cheap version of 128-tick. Additionally, I have noticed that player animations seem unnatural when enemies wide-swing/peak. There is undoubtedly an elevated advantage for players who peek first compared to CS:GO. This may be related to buggy character animations, lag compensation, interpolation, server-side issues, etc.

Thirdly, there is a clear issue with spraying when compared to CS:GO. Spraying feels somewhat random, and pulling down does not consistently produce the desired recoil control. I'm not sure if this is an intended change though.

Fourthly, the audio when hearing footsteps and other in-game noises sound unclear and can be quite difficult to differentiate. This may be a me problem, but I've heard this has been an issue for many other players too.
